Parental infertility and cerebral palsy in children born spontaneously or after IVF/ICSI

November 4th, 2010 by admin

Doctors have known for some time that children born after some fertility treatments are at increased risk of cerebral palsy. However, it was not known whether this risk was due to the treatment itself, the higher frequency of preterm or multiple births, or a mechanism associated with couples’ underlying infertility. Now, new research indicates that underlying infertility is not the main reason for the increased risk seen in IVF/ICSI children.

Metal Pollution Tied to Parkinson’s Disease

November 3rd, 2010 by Dr. Mercola

People living near sources of high manganese emissions, such as a steel factory, are at higher risk of developing Parkinson’s disease, according to the results of a new study.

The researchers analyzed data on roughly five million people, and compared Parkinson’s rates to industry emissions of copper, lead and manganese obtained from the Environmental Protection Agency.

According to Reuters:

“In counties with little or no release of the metals, 274 out of every 100,000 people had the disease, compared to 489 in counties with high manganese levels.  The risk remained increased even after accounting for differences in age, sex and race”.

Even the Sickest Babies Benefit from Breast-Feeding

November 3rd, 2010 by Dr. Mercola

Researchers at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia have created a successful program in which nurses helped mothers attain high rates of breast-feeding in very sick babies.

When babies are in critical condition, breast-feeding may not be considered a priority, or even feasible.  But breast milk helps to fend off infection and provides easily digestible, nutritious ingredients that can reduce the infant’s stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Eurekalert reports:

“[The researchers] describe a series of steps called the Transition to Breast Pathway, in which NICU nurses systematically guide the mother in breast-feeding practices, which culminated in a majority of the infants in the study (58 out of 80) feeding at their mother’s breast before being discharged from the hospital.”
