Gargantuan Helpings of Fast Food Surge in Popularity

Fast food restaurants across the U.S. are offering ever-larger burgers, sandwiches and rich dishes. The trend is not pleasing nutrition experts. Many are backing federal legislation that would require restaurants to list calories on menus or menu boards.
Applebee’s Quesadilla Burger (1,820 calories) recently earned an Xtreme Eating Award from the Center for Science in the Public Interest. The “award” is a condemnation -- the health advocacy group advises that most people should limit themselves to about 2,000 calories per day, not per meal.
Red Lobster offers the Ultimate Fondue with a calorie count of 1,490. Chili’s Big Mouth Bites comes in at 2,350 calories, and the Cheesecake Factory’s chicken and biscuits is a hefty 2,500 calories.
